Derek Daly

Blues Complete Daly Signing

Waterford FC is delighted to announce the signing of winger Derek Daly from English League One club Chesterfield.

The Limerick native has signed for the club on a permanent basis for the 2017 SSE Airtricity League First Division campaign.

Daly, who recently spent time out on loan at Frickley Athletic, played his youth football with Dublin outfit Cherry Orchard whilst also picking up caps for the Republic of Ireland U16s before securing a move across the channel to Chesterfield where he has featured for the first team in both the EFL Trophy and the league this year.

Speaking on the move, Daly commented:

“I’m happy to be back in Ireland to sign for Waterford ahead of the league kicking off this weekend. Hopefully this move will be a good opportunity for me to get some game time and show my ability which I feel I haven’t really had the chance to do the past few months.

“Waterford are a strong side with great aspirations of getting promoted so for me, to get that experience at 19 is an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I’m back home in Ireland to play football, work hard and pick up my first senior league title.”

Waterford FC General Manager Paul Cleary expects a busy day ahead:

“Today is transfer deadline for the club so we are hopeful of completing a number of bits of business to make our squad as competitive as possible going into our opening league fixture with Athlone Town this Friday.

“The management team are pleased to get Derek’s transfer from Chesterfield over the line. He’s an attacking threat and has the experience of playing across the water. We’re happy with the squad that we’re putting together and we should be able to complete another couple of deals before the close of play today.”
