SSE Airtricity League Premier Division
Cork City -v- Waterford FC
Friday, February 22, 2019
Kick Off: 7.45pm
Referee: Derek Tomney

It’s a Munster Derby this Friday night as Waterford FC make the trip to Turners Cross to face Cork City.

Last weekend’s SSE Airtricity League opener at home to Shamrock Rovers ended in defeat as the visitors snatched a winner with the last kick of the game in second half stoppage time. Kevin Lynch’s superb free kick had given the Blues a 1-0 lead.

But Alan Reynolds’ side have regrouped and after a good week of training, are fully prepared for Friday’s match.

The sides met no less than five times last season in league and cup action last season. Cork took the points in the opening meeting of the sides with a 2-0 win in Turner’s Cross. The Blues hit back when the sides met at the RSC with a 2-1 win before a penalty shootout win against Cork in the EA Sports Cup in May.

Cork won 3-0 in Turners Cross in the 4th meeting before a narrow 2-1 win in the RSC in the side’s final meeting of the season.

MANAGER’S VIEW: Speaking to WaterfordFC.ie ahead of the trip to Turners Cross, manager Alan Reynolds said:

“Of course we’re disappointed with the result [last weekend]; especially to concede so late in the game with such a big crowd at the RSC. Most important thing is that we learn from it now.

“That’s last week and now we have to look to the next game this Friday against Cork City. We’ve trained well this week and it’s given the new lads more time with the squad after only arriving last week too.

“Going to Cork is never easy and we need to be ready for a big atmosphere and a tough game. Our fans packed the RSC last weekend and I know they’ll be in Cork in big numbers again and that’s what the team will thrive from hopefully.”

TEAM NEWS: Waterford FC has no injury concerns ahead of the game.
